The Cybersecurity Gap for Small Businesses

Updated: Oct 23, 2023

Cybersecurity breaches and attacks have been making headlines in recent years, and for good reason. The risk of cybercrime is higher than ever, and the consequences can be devastating. While larger corporations and government agencies have been investing heavily in cybersecurity, small businesses have largely been left behind. But why is this a problem? And what can we do to close the cybersecurity gap?

The reality is that small businesses are not immune to cyber attacks, and in fact, they are often the prime target of many cybercriminals. According to a 2020 report by the Ponemon Institute, 28% of small businesses have experienced a cyber attack in the past 12 months. And of those businesses, 54% experienced a data breach involving sensitive customer or employee information.

One reason for this is that small businesses often have fewer resources to devote to cybersecurity than their larger counterparts. They may lack the budget to invest in state-of-the-art security technologies, or the staff to manage their security systems. Additionally, many small businesses work with larger companies that require them to comply with specific cybersecurity regulations, such as the Cybersecurity Maturity Model Certification (CMMC), which can be challenging to navigate.
